One of the largest cities in Sonora, Obregón boasts six major universities and a highly-educated labor force. Seventy percent of the population is younger than 36 years of age, with more than 30,000 people able to work in a maquiladora, yet wage costs and living expenses are lower than in other cities.

While it is one of the most prosperous agricultural regions in the country, Obregón also offers four industrial parks and is home to Coleman Products (Chrysler Motors). The local airport offers connecting flights to and from Phoenix, Arizona.
